Our History
The members of the Pocono Professional Golf Series (PPGS) are PGA professionals representing the Philadelphia PGA section. The PPGS was founded in the late 1970's during the nationwide gas shortage. Due to rising costs and difficulties associated with the shortage, our professionals struggled with travel to Philadelphia to compete on a weekly basis.
To resolve this situation -- under the umbrella and support of the Philadelphia Section PGA -- the PPGS was founded. A weekly Pro-Am tour was created featuring some of the best courses from the Lehigh Valley to the Pocono Mountains. Any of our local club professionals became eligible to invite three of their members for great days of camaraderie and competition.
In keeping with the spirit of the PGA of America, the professionals of the PPGS desired to contribute to their local communities. During its nearly 50-year history, the PPGS has made a special focus on raising money for charities all over the region. More recently, the charitable focus has shifted to scholarships for local youth golfers to attend college.
In the early 2000's, the PPGS started its very own Ryder Cup-style tournament known as the Pocono Cup. Every fall, the top 10 players from the Poconos compete against the top 10 players from the Lehigh Valley. The competition is fierce for year-long bragging rights! Our professionals qualify for this event by their individual scores from every Pro-Am event during the PPGS season.
